Design Considerations

Rivet Selection Guidelines:

  • Material Compatibility: Match rivet material to base material
  • Diameter: Typically 3-4 times sheet thickness
  • Length: Grip length + 1.5 x diameter for upset
  • Spacing: Minimum 3 x diameter center-to-center
  • Edge Distance: Minimum 2 x diameter from edge

Joint Strength:

  • Shear strength proportional to rivet cross-sectional area
  • Bearing strength depends on sheet thickness and rivet diameter
  • Multiple rivet patterns distribute load
  • Consider fatigue loading in dynamic applications

Quality & Testing

Dimensional Inspection

Head dimensions, shank diameter, length tolerance

Material Testing

Tensile, shear strength per ASTM standards

Installation Testing

Upset diameter, head formation, grip range

Corrosion Testing

Salt spray, accelerated weathering tests
